U.S. Government Shutdown Triggers Major Air Travel Disruption

A prolonged government shutdown in the United States has brought severe disruption to air travel, with more than 5,000 flights canceled or delayed nationwide. Thousands of federal employees remain unpaid, with air traffic controllers among those hardest hit. Many have taken unpaid leave or resigned, leading to staff shortages and growing delays across major airports.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced a 4 percent reduction in domestic flights, expected to rise to 10% next week if the shutdown continues. Officials warn nearly 4,000 flights a day could face cancellations or significant delays.

Major carriers including Delta and United Airlines confirmed that passengers will receive full refunds for canceled tickets. Yet, with Thanksgiving travel approaching, passengers are facing mounting uncertainty.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warned that if the shutdown persists, flight cancellations could surge to 20 percent. He added that even after a resolution, the impact may linger for several days before operations fully stabilize.

President Trump again called on Senate Republicans to scrap the 60-vote filibuster threshold, allowing legislation to pass with 51 votes instead. Meanwhile, Senate Leader John Thune said Democrats refuse to engage in talks without clear commitments on healthcare funding.
