A fierce blaze tore through a residential block in Hong Kong’s Tai Po on Wednesday afternoon, killing at least four people, including a firefighter. Eight others suffered critical injuries.

Smoke filled the building as several residents became trapped inside. Multiple fire teams launched rescue efforts, but thick smoke and heavy flames slowed operations. The fire spread to nearby buildings under construction, prompting further emergency response.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has sent his condolences over those who died in the fire, according to state broadcaster CCTV.
Police reported a surge in calls to emergency services moments after the fire broke out. Local authorities said the building houses 1,984 flats with nearly 4,000 residents.
Secretary for Security Chris Tang Ping-keung has said he is deeply saddened by the death of firefighter Ho Wai-ho.
“I am profoundly grieved at the passing of Mr Ho, who lost his life in the course of an operation. I offer my deepest condolences to his family members,” Tang says.
