Super Typhoon Fung-Wong Devastates Philippines, Leaves 18 Dead, Heads Toward Taiwan

Still reeling from the aftermath of Typhoon Kalmaegi, Philippines has been struck again—this time by Super Typhoon Fung-Wong, which has claimed at least 18 lives across the country – AP News report.

The massive storm tore through central and northern regions before moving into the South China Sea, where it weakened into a tropical storm, according to the national weather bureau. Authorities reported that Fung-Wong is now advancing toward Taiwan, where it could make landfall by Thursday.

Heavy rainfall has already triggered flooding in parts of the island, with local officials warning of possible landslides in mountainous areas.

Fung-Wong hit the Philippines late Sunday night, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. More than 400,000 homes were damaged, and over a hundred villages submerged by floodwaters. Widespread power outages and landslides added to the devastation.

Before the storm’s arrival, more than 1.4 million residents evacuated to safer areas, officials said. Schools and government offices were ordered closed through Tuesday. While domestic and international flights suspended due to severe weather conditions. Over 60,000 passengers were stranded at ports after authorities halted all sea travel for safety reasons.

Disaster officials noted that the Philippines faces nearly 20 typhoons and tropical storms each year, making it one of the world’s most disaster-prone nations. In addition to frequent cyclones, the country also remains vulnerable to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
